World-class whitewater rafting, hiking, biking, camping, fishing, hunting: Outdoor adventure is available just an hour’s drive from the Capitol City at the nation’s newest National Park. The recently designated New River Gorge National Park and Preserve includes more than 70,000 acres of land along the New River, one of the oldest rivers on the North American continent. Locals have enjoyed this rugged, scenic area for centuries and with the National Park designation, outdoor adventurers from across the globe are already planning their visits to “The Gorge.”
The New River Gorge National Park and Preserve is the nation’s 63rd national park. In addition to outdoor recreation, the park is a geologist’s dream. Raging rivers and steep canyons reveal the park’s natural history, and fossil evidence has led geologists to estimate the New could be as old as 320 million years.
