Take the Scenic Route

The American Heart Association recommends walking 150 minutes each week. The Charleston area has an abundance of safe spaces offering fresh air and plenty of room for social distancing to meet this goal.

Kanawha Boulevard closes this weekend to encourage safe recreational activity. Lanes close Saturday at 9:00 a.m. and reopen Sunday at 6:00 p.m. The restrooms will be opened at Haddad Riverfront Park.

Explore the Carriage Trail for a  change of scenery. This 0.65-mile gravel trail rises gently through the forest above Charleston. Look for historical markers, including the graves of two female Civil War spies. Check out this WV Explorer article for more info.

Kanawha State Forest is open to anyone seeking outdoor adventure. The hiking and biking trails provide fresh air and plenty of space to clear your head and tally up those miles. Teach the kiddos to look for (but not touch!) frog eggs in the vernal pools next to the Spotted Salamander Trail.

Coonskin Park also offers plenty of room for social distancing. Explore over a thousand acres of woodland, take to the hiking and biking trails, and try your hand at disk golf.
