Summer's in full swing! So now what do you do with the kids?

1. Water Fun!

Nothing says summer like pools and splash parks. The Kanawha Valley is home to several public pools that are open daily throughout Labor Day. So pack the bathing suits and head out, but be prepared to spend your day adjusting goggles and cheering each time the little ones jump off the diving board.

Don’t forget the much anticipated Magic Island Splash Park. Due to the floods, the splash park opening has been delayed until July. Please check with the City of Charleston on the most up to date information on the ribbon cutting.

2. Food & Family!

What goes together better than food and family time, right? During the summer months you can find several food related events in the area.

August 13th – Help string beans for Manna Meal at the Capitol Market

Bring your own beans or purchase some from the local farmers at the market. Bring the entire family, your chairs and prepare to string those beans for a good cause. Last year’s event donated 826 pounds - let’s see if we can beat that this year!

August 14th – Sundae Fundae at the South Charleston Mound

Bring the family and enjoy carnival games and FREE ice cream as the United Way of Central WV hosts its annual ice cream social in conjunction with the kick off to South Charleston Summerfest.

August 27th – Cupcake Festival at Hurricane’s Valley Park

Enjoy a day of cupcakes and fun for the entire family! There will be events going on all day long for everyone! The day will kick off with a Cupcake Chase 5K Run/Walk with an added twist this year! For the car and motorcycle enthusiasts, there will be a Cupcake Classic Car and Motorcycle Cruise In. The event also includes an amateur cupcake competition for bakers, a lil' miss and lil' mister cupcake pageant, and plenty of cupcake and food vendors! All of the proceeds from the event will benefit the Children's Miracle Network Hospital

3. Learning and Fun at the Clay Center for the Arts & Sciences

I love many things about the Clay Center for the Arts & Sciences, but in the dead heat of summer – I love the air conditioner the most.  So while mom, dad or grandparents are getting cooled off, the kids can play and learn. It is a win win situation for everyone involved. This summer the Clay Center has two great exhibits for children:

Welcome to the Island of Sodor! In Thomas & Friends™: Explore the Rails, visitors will find themselves surrounded by the island’s iconic locations, including Knapford Station and the Sodor Steamworks. Visitors climb aboard a large model of Thomas the Tank Engine and help him be a “Really Useful Engine.” Children can race trains along a giant track and work together to sort and load cargo to maintain engines. The exhibit combines exciting play opportunities with important concepts in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), and an emphasis on developing 21st century skills. These ideas are woven and layered throughout the exhibit, creating an experience that speaks to a diversity of interests, age groups and learning styles.

Travel by land, sea and air on this unique adventure. Ride a hovercraft, float a boat and land a soaring hot air balloon while observing gravity, friction and the laws of motion in action.

Always a family favorite! Current showings in the Digital Dome; Back to the Moon for Good, Dinosaurs and Kaluoka’ Hina – The Enchanted Reef.

Science Saturday at the Capitol Market presented by the Clay Center for the Arts & Sciences

Go back to school with science skills that are sure to amaze!  Watch as ink vanishes before your eyes, build an incredibly strong structure using a single sheet of paper and create unique works of art with acids and bases.

4. Play and shop!

The Charleston Town Center is the place for both. Enjoy the many shops at the mall, including some new places that will be opening this summer. The kids will enjoy the CAMC Play Patch while parents get to rest their feet from all the summer activity.  Stay up to date with the Charleston Town Center's events this summer. Expect a teen star for the start of back to school shopping.
